Is it just me or has everyone been getting increased latency over the past couple of months?
Started out with IDNET receiving 25ms on tests and servers, now i get 60ms ping on tests and same servers.  IDNET say no problems there end.  It's not my pc because have reformatted it to rid any viruses.  Same modem.  Any ideas?

Lance

I'm pinging less than 20ms to most sites, so no problem at IDNet.

It might not be your PC, but it could well be your modem/router, BT line, or a combination of the two.

I would start by using a different router to see if that helps

Hi Alex

Even with interleaving on, I'm pinging most UK sites in <25ms.

What firewall are you using, what AV software, what OS? Has anything about your setup changed from when you first joined IDNet? Have you checked the status of your exchange?

Sorry for so many questions.

I'm using Avast antivirus, Zonealarm free home edition, Ad-aware 2007 and CCleaner.  Running on Windows XP SE.  Nothing regarding setup has changed apart from the reformat i did because i thought there may be a virus.
Exchange has been showing as having no known issues.

I have been using www.speedtest.net to determine ping since joining IDNET.  I always get a great download/upload speed, but my ping on there is now most commonly 60, rather than the original 23 (testing to london server). As of late, this also reflects on the server i have always been playing on.

I have attached a ping/ tracert test which shows no major problem with pinging to UK sites (considering it's been done at 8:30am it's slightly higher).  Yet i can still state that my ping has more than doubled over the past 2 months   :S

I have been assured interleaving is off.

I live 10 metres from my exchange as the crow flies.

I am using a D-Link DSL-320T modem.  Only have a modem.

Try disabling the firewall briefly, see if that helps. Also check the status of your exchange, I'm wondering if it's congested. The only other thing I can think to try is changing MTU to 1458, and adjusting RWIN to suit. If that doesn't help, you need to talk to support, I think.  :(

Here's the same ping/tracert, as I said, I have interleaving on.

Frustrating.  Somehow you have a lower latency with interleave on.

Rik

I know - and I can't explain it. The only thing I can think of is an issue with your exchange. After that, we are on the same network.

Do modems/routers make much difference?

Rik

It's always worth trying to eliminate them from the equation, Alex. It's also worth checking the error count to see if that gives any clues.

How do i check what has caused any errors?
You mind me asking... are you on 'Home Max' or 'Home Supermax'?

Rik

Hi Alex

I'm actually on Home Lite, I'm a very modest user. :)

You should find the error count in your router logs/status. You won't find out what's causing the errors, merely how many you have had in a given period. A high count could indicate that you are likely to be suffering from occasional re-transmissions of packets, which would bump latency up.

When my previous router started to fail, it did cause the latency to increase, as well as increase packet loss. if you can, I would try borrowing a friends to see if that makes a difference.

Sorry for my mid-sentence reply above - I had to leave the house in a unexpected hurry.

No worries.  Appreciate all input, thanks.
Have tried turning firewall off, unfortunately without any change in ping.
In general, can certain routers/ modems decrease latency?

Lance

In general, you certainly wouldn't expect so, but if its starting to develop a fault its more than possible.
