Just a 'FYI'

Because our mains electricity supply can sometimes be a bit flaky I decided to install a UPS. Seems to work ok - and it has protection for the phone line.

However, when I logged in to my administrators account (and no, it's not called 'Admin') the software that came with the UPS nagged me that "Hibernation is not enabled".  Now that's never bothered me before as this desktop is normally shut down when I leave it. The Standby/Hibernation option was not present on the logout screen.

I looked at the power management options in XP. The hibernation tab was not present on the relevant setup window - huh? OK - check the BIOS settings - nope - all correct there. Desperation... look at Micro$oft's Knowledge Base.

One article had a number of suggestions as to what might stop hibernation - out of date drivers, incompatible hardware, VGA video drivers ....  errrgh - what the heck has video got to do with power management?

Then thinks.. veery slooowly:  when I built this rig a few months ago I was so pleased when it all fired up and XP loaded - nice pretty pictures on the screen - I had just accepted the default video driver included in XP.

So I dug out the CD that came with the Asus video card, loaded their driver and BINGO - the power management window now has the Hibernate tab, check the box and hibernation is enabled.

Two weeks of head scratching and hard thinking (thinking comes hard to me!) all caused by Micro$ludge XP not liking it's own video driver.

Now where did I put those Linux CDs...

The sort of problem that can drive us all nuts, John. Glad you got there. I suspect the Windows driver is a no frills version.
