Trying to connect to the idnet ftp server is becoming a nightmare for me.

Using FileZilla, as recommended, I am telling it to connect to ftp.idnet.com, with my username and password (as on the setup page) in their respective boxes.

FileZilla then resolves the server name, but is unable to connect at all. I even tried an anonymous login, with the same result.

Is the port number (21) wrong?

Try the FTP Publishing URL. It take the form of  ftp://UsernamePassword@ftp.idnet.com/

Nope - All that results in is FileZilla changing the address back to ftp.idnet.com, moving my username & password into the username box and trying to log in without a password.

Bloody technology!

I'm using the FireFTP add on for Firefox, it works fine with ftp.idnet.com and my username and password. It's quite good give it a try:

Same here, Phil. I also had no problems with an older version of Smart FTP.

Right, I've just set up my website and uploaded a holding page using FireFTP. In setting up the new connection in FireFTP (an Account Manager box opens) I've used the following.

Account name: IDNet (you can use anything here)
Host: ftp.idnet.com
Login: The username given to me by IDNet on the "Web Space Setup" page under "Your website details"
Password: as given on the same page immediately underneath

It worked first time.

Rik

That's exactly right, Colin. As far as I can see, only if you use nVu do you use the url in the forum given on the website.

I've been using Nvu for several years to write code, but prefer to use a separate FTP program for uploading. I'm just old and set in my ways :)

[02:18:16] SmartFTP v2.5.1006.3
[02:18:16] Resolving host name "ftp.idnet.com"
[02:18:16] Connecting to 212.69.36.147 Port: 21

Any suggestions guys? Got the right host name, username & password.

It's working fine here, Dave. If you use Firefox, try it with Fire FTP - I found that Smart FTP threw a few wobblies for me, especially the newer versions.

Just checking, you are trying to connect to the ftp server from an IDNet adsl line and you don't have some sort of proxy-server or "ip hiding software" in place?

To quote the setup page:

QuoteFor security FTP access is restricted to IDNet IP addresses and therefore you will need to upload any pages using your IDNet broadband connection.

Thanks for that one, Rik, had not come across Fire FTP before - just installed it and I like it, very easy to use and connected straight away with no problems.

Using my idnet line, no IP hiding or spoofing in place, tried with firewall on and off. Smart FTP is in my firewall's whitelist anyway, but even with the wall down, nada.

Got me completely baffled!

Certainly the easiest FTP software I've used. Although I'm pretty thick when it comes to stuff like this. If I can use it effectively it's certainly idiot proof.

Have you tried another app, Dave?

DaveH

Well I'll be damned - Just tried Smart FTP again and it connected instantly!

Now all I need is some content to transfer :-)

Thanks all for advice.

Rik

We can supply content too. ;)
