Tell him that you will raise a dispute with Paypal if he refuses to give you advance payment of return postage .. it was his fault not yours, and mention negative feedback if he refuses to play ball..He is in the wrong, not you.

Personally, I would try to reason with the seller, before going down the official dispute path, but that just me not favouring confrontation.  Given his 100% feedback, he's not going to want to risk that, so will probably refund your postage as well, as long as you make it clear that's what you require.  One way might be to send him a separate PayPal invoice for the postage, or agree to send him a PayPal invoice for the complete transaction, i.e. returned item + costs.  He said he will will give you a refund of "all monies paid", which should include return postage costs.

But if reason fails... The seller should be going out of his way to put things right, he is so badly in the wrong. Of course, you could negotiate a new price if you wanted to keep it, Sam.

Take a look at the item condition to the left of the description it says New there

well, I e-bay'd for a netgear 834g after all of your praise for it, & I've just installed it ( a bit of a stab in the dark as it is completely separate fom my machine - its at the main phone point downstairs & the computer is upstairs, using wireless only). It replaces a Belkin 7633. I live 4 miles from the exchange, & before I joined IDNET, I was with Virgin, & lucky to get 512. Recently I have been getting 980.

since the Netgear, my connection speed is up from 1346 to 1696

You do realise that, in my mind, I think of you as Whistling Jack Smith?

Most routers can't report greater attenuation that 63 or 63.5db, so your actual figure may be higher than that. On a fixed rate product, you would only get 512k. Your profile is correct for your current sync speed, but I notice that your target noise margin has been raised to 9db. If the line is stable, that might reduce to 6db after a couple of weeks, and that would lift your speed enough to get a 1500 profile. However, the line will have to be rock solid for that to happen.

Have you done all the usual things, such as removing the ring wire?

my noise regulary drops...its been at 3-5 often....so I reboot the router....I was aiming for mid-teens - I guess I'm wrong again? 

I have no ring wire & an adslNation microfilter on the advice here

my wiring is strange....I had a fault and BT engineers renewed lots of copper nearby. After which the only place I could connect was at the main point. Any extensions in the house (through which I used to connect6, caused the connection to fail  - most odd & lots of head scratching from the BT men - hence the wireless router)

oohh, & BTW....I had a Paypal dispute regarding the Netgear, which lasted a month, & now the all singing & dancing 2wire has raised its head.....wish I'd waited...seems ideal for out here in the wilds

The standard margin for BT is 6db, it's raised to try and stabilise the line. Don't re-boot unless you have to, frequent disconnections are seen as instability and will result in poorer speeds, higher target margin etc.

Why external work should cause your sockets to cease functioning (I assume they are OK for phones) is a bit of a puzzle. I would guess that they actually increased your attenuation and that caused the ADSL signal to fail, but it's only a guess.

The 2700 may well have been a good router for you. Might be worth trying and, if it's better, flogging the Netgear.

the wiring thing was very strange - even a 2 metre extension plugged-in would cause it to drop, & yet prior to the failure the whole house loop (4 sockets) worked for adsl. It was a real beggar to check as my machine is water cooled & lugging it downstairs with its attendant radiator was a game from hell. Still....my neighbour (200 yards down the hill) only gets around 220 so I guess I should be grateful!

It does make me think that your attenuation increased, it's the only thing that makes sense.

It's not good, but Netgears tend to hold the line down to -1 or -2db. If your target margin wasn't at 9db, you would have seen the router re-sync by now. You may have to make a choice between stability (increased target margin, lower sync speed) and speed if things don't improve.

That's the router's way of telling you it's gone negative. Netgear didn't expect it to happen, so they didn't write the code properly to decode the negative binary value.
