Whilst your modem will work, I would strongly recommend getting a router as they offer better stability and much better security.

If you are confident, you could buy a 2wire 2700HGV router (also called BT business hub) from ebay. Once purchased, a simple 'unlocking' procedure will allow it to work on IDNet (or any other ISP). Many members on this form have achieved great results using this router. They normally sell for up to £30, although you may well get one cheaper.

If you prefer to buy from a shop, I think Speedtouch 585(?) routers are often recommended, as are Netgears. You can buy a preconfigured netgear router direct from IDNet, which gives the advantage that they can remotely connect and manage it if you need them to.

The problem with MAX adsl is that there is no best router to have, which makes it harder to recommend one (although the 2700 has made it a bit easier!).

No problem. :)

If you want to get the 2700HGV from ebay, I'm sure some others on here will give some recommendations as to who to, or not to, buy from. One to definitely avoid is DigiDave (nickname dodgydave)!

You can't be too sure with private sellers either.  I won mine a week Friday ago (18th), and it still hasn't arrived.  The seller won't respond to emails either, despite 99% Feedback.  Currently debating how long to leave it before starting a dispute with PayPal.   >:(

I think it is acceptable for the seller (if private) to leave it 3 days maximum before dispatch, and then delivery should be a couple of days after that.

If you don't hear from him or recieve it tomorrow, I would email him in the evening to say that you are going to start a dispute and will leave him negative feedback if you haven't recieved the item on Thursday, or recieved a Royal Mail tracking number with delivery on Friday. That gives him more than enough time to read the email, and dispatch it.

I certainly won't leave it too much longer.  This is the first time I have been worried about an eBay transaction.  :(

I've been with eBay for 4 years as a seller and buyer, and have had only one dodgy experience.  If this guy has good feedback and plenty of them he may have a computer problem.
EX Orange and proud of it.

I purchased mine from a Dave, this one:
patioheater@ruralinternet.co.uk
I don't know if this is the "Dodgy Dave" that is referred to here.  If so I must say that I have found him anything but dodgy.  I had problem getting it to work (my fault entirely) he even gave me his telephone number so that he could talk me through the problem, which we did.  Not the cheapest source perhaps, but the service was excellent.
Nothing is perfect, not even my ignorance!

Rik

That's a different Dave, though he's definitely not the cheapest source...

DigiDave is digidave_ie on eBay. I bought from him (at an absolute bargain) and had a faulty LED. He sent me another one that has a different problem. Although I'm sure he'd send another one, I didn't bother as it cost so little and the first one works fine, other than the LED. I think it's worth the risk if the price is right.

What about this?

Netgear WGR614UK Wireless 54G Cable/DSL Router

as you may have guessed, although im ok with computers in general, ive never used a router before

Most people who use Netgears, use the DG834G.  I'm not positive that the WGR614UK is for BT line users.  It may only be for cable DSL.

Hang on a bit, and someone will be along with more advice.  For what it's worth, I use a Netgear DG834G and have had no problems.  They are also quite user friendly and easy to set up.  A lot of people on here have recently gone onto the 2Wire 2700HGV, which is only easily available on eBay.  This is actually a BT router, but it can be made to operate with other ISPs, and some people have reported improved speeds after switching to one, although it's perhaps not quite as straightforward as the Netgear.  :)

The dual ssid 2700hgv takes 3 minutes to set up for IDNet.

The beauty of the 2700HGV is that is a business hub and therefore made for business line. They have to be reliable and will work very well on a long BT line. It is far superior to the BT home hub and will hold sync like no other.  ;D

I'd wholeheartedly agree with what Den has said. The 2700 (be it the BT-branded version, or the plain 2Wire version) is a great router, and nearly everyone that's tried it gets better sync that other routers can offer them. I think it's somewhat of a bargain, too.  :)

Not true.. I bought the 2 SSID version, was fine for 2wks and then decided not to like my line anymore and threw a tantrum.. It caused my noise margin to go upto 12 and my sync down to 6600+ and now BT wont put my margin back to 6.

I've got my Netgear DG834G back on and line has been stable since.

That could just be coincidence, though it's certainly possible it developed a fault.

A couple of months ago, there was obviously something causing a great amount of noise on my line, completely out of the blue, which really messed with my sync and target SNRM. Have you tried going back to the 2Wire now to see if it's back to its usual good self? :)

Netgear WGR614UK Wireless 54G Cable/DSL Router

AFAIK, that's a cable router. As Simon says, you want the DG834 or 834G (wireless) or 834GT (also wireless). I'd advise you to avoid the pre-N models.

You could also look at the Speedtouch 585, £20 here:

or the 2700HGV as recommended by others.

In the end it is whatever works for you. Most of the people that have had problems on their line and changed to the 2wire hub have had great results. In my case it has improved my sync beyond my wildest dreams and I am more than happy with it.
