Hi,

Got a BT2700HGV for use on our small corporate network. Have managed to get most of the features up and running, however, I can't get the content screening working. I've setup a number of our workstations with the kids/teens screening groups, and added specific sites to the blocked list. However, even after adding these sites, I can browse to them from the specified workstations.

The router settings are:

Model: BT2700HGV
Serial Number: 340721058507
Hardware Version: 2701-100589-005
Software Version: 5.29.107.19
Key Code: 528Y-27G4-A222-22BJ-B22V
Enhanced Services: Internet Access Control
Content Screening
Firewall Monitor
IP Addy: 192.168.1.254
DHCP is disabled, as we have an internal Windows Server that does DHCP.

I can't see anything thats missing, or not enabled. Can anyone suggest a solution? What needs to be setup/configured to enable these screening groups?

Many thanks

Ben

Hi Ben, welcome to the forum, have a karma. :)  :welc: :karmic:

Unfortunately, I don't have a clue, as I've never tried to set up content screening, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly who has.

Hmm, I believe content filtering only works when connected to BT Business Broadband.

Have you tried with 1 computer connected directly into the router with DHCP enabled? I think it could have something to do with this. The 2wire can be a pain with other DHCP servers as the router doesn't detect the clients properly.

Try setting up multiple static IPs in a standard no-nat setup on it - not pretty!!

Does the windows server 'share' the internet connection (proxy or such) or is the gateway DHCP gives out 192.168.1.254?

Sorry, I can't answer your question directly (I haven't seen content screening on my 2700 with SBC firmware - is this a BT thing?).

What I can suggest is that you use OpenDNS' DNSs on your router, then you can create an account on their website and customise a whole lot of stuff. As well as specific site blocking, you can block categories of sites (the categories are managed by OpenDNS), e.g. anything of a criminal nature. It's extremely powerful and works well.

That's actually an excellent idea. I was going to suggest a freeware proxy server which does the same but OpenDNS would be much easier and add an extra layer of reliability in. I actually have 4 DNS servers set - IDNet primary, OpenDNS 1, IDnet secondry, OpenDNS 2.

Thank you both for stepping in, karmic answers. :)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply (and to everyone else).

The current setup is:

BT2700 as the gateway/router, connected to a 24 port switch. Also on the switch is the server, ip = 192.168.1.10, (win2003 SBS, with DHCP), which issues IPs between 192.168.1.20-30, along with the gateway IP (as you said 192.168.1.254) & DNS addrsses (itself & the gateway). There are currently 6 workstations on the switch, (along with 2 network printers) but this will increase to 10 soon, which is why we needed the 24 port switch, the BT2700 only has 4 ports on the back.

I just assumed that the router would block any traffic, going through it, to those sites whether connected directly, or going through a switch.

I'll have to test tomorrow, and attach one of the workstations to the router directly. If that does work, and it means we can't use a switch I'll have to look at the OpenDNS solution suggested.

Cheers

Ben

I use  a dual SSID with the same software version, but with DHCP enabled in the router, and the generic content filtering and  for named sites works fine connected through IDNet.
