For the past two nights now anytime past midnight I'm losing my connection for hours on end.

Anyone else losing their connection?  Is there something wrong at IDnet?

I'm losing both ADSL & PPP.

Thats from my router log if that makes sense to anyone.  I doubt it reveals anything at all but I thought I would post it just incase.

No real comfort to you, but no loss of connection here. ;)

Man this is pissing me off.

I have two friends in the same street as me one BT one IDnet both on the same exchange and they are fine.  I have tried three different routers.  Still I know that all of this will right its self in a few hours time but I hate not having the internet for long periods of time on a weekend.  TV sucks and I've watched all my DVDS :'(

I'm sure someone will be along to help you soon.  I was going to suggest BT engineering work, but if your neighbours are not affected, maybe that rules that out.  If we can't sort of here, a call to IDNet Support on Monday would probably be worthwhile.

If you're losing sync, Neo, it's nothing to do with IDNet. It is possible that it's the BT work, though it's only supposed to produce 20 minutes of downtime. Your neighbours might not be affected if they are on a different DSLAM.

I'd suggest dropping IDNet an email, support@idnet.net, there may be something showing in the BT logs that would tell them what is happening.

I take it you've made sure it's not your internal phone wiring picking up noise?

If you're losing sync, you can be certain it's not an IDNet issue. You lose PPP after losing sync.

Could you post your router stats?

neocr0n

My router stats won't be much help to you now, as predicted my net is back to normall but there is a good chance I'll suffer some downtime tonight so I'll post here if I do.

If it continues I'll be contacting IDnet to see what the deal is.  Yeah Rik I checked my internal wiring.  Have a feeling its something at my exchange involving BT.  My net was so bad a month or two ago I was forced to drop to a 2mb service to hold a connection.

Night time is always more noisy than day. If you sync in the day with an SNRM of 6dB, this could decline enough at night to cause a re-sync. But, I suspect this goes deeper than that, as if this were the case, you shouldn't suffer everyday as you'll have a SNRM of ~6dB at night (and better in the day).

It could be internal wiring, even if you've given it a physical inspection. If you have a NTE5 master socket you could try connecting your router to the test socket behind the faceplate and see if this makes a difference at night. If it does, we know internal wiring is picking up noise, perhaps more so at night.

Something else to consider is the time that re-syncs are occurring at night. RouterStats may help you to see if there's a pattern, e.g. street lights coming on.

Rik

Your router stats might give us a clue, Neo, particularly the downstream noise margin and attenuation.

I'm on 2mb lads should be pretty stable.

SNR 17 down 20 up
Attenuation 46.5 down 31.5 up

Indeed, that should be quite stable. I'd try RouterStats to see if your noise is suffering at some point, and then we can try and work out what's causing it. If it shows that the noise isn't changing much, it could well be something on BT's side.

neocr0n

I'll keep an eye on my connection from now, see if this happens again tonight.  I'll post any findings in here tomorrow or something.

Thanks for all help guys, much appreciated.

You're welcome. As Sebby says, Routerstats may be a useful monitoring tool to try and establish the pattern of what is going on.

Ok its happening again.

Its took me several reconnects just to get on to this forum thread and make this post.  Chances are this will continue for at least an hour, in the past its gone on for as long as 5.

Current line stats when I manage to reconnect.

SNR 3.5 down 19 up
Attenuation 46 down 31.5 up

Obviously the SNR down is pathetic for a 2mb fixed line should be more like 17-19 is my usual.

Losing both ADSL & PPP.

What do you think guys?  Something at the exchange or perhaps IDnet?

It could either be something outside of your property or something inside your property, and we need to find out before this gets raised with BT (if BT find that your internal wiring is to blame, you'll get landed with a £160+ bill).

First thing's first, do you have a NTE5 master socket? If so, carefully remove the front plate (the internal wiring is attached to the inside of this plate, so don't pull it away, just let it dangle). Behind it, you'll see a socket; this is the test socket. Plug your modem in there and re-post your stats.

What this does is connect the router at the point at which the line comes into the house, bypassing extension wiring, which is prone to noise pickup. Connecting to the front of the master socket is no good as this behaves just like an extension (i.e. suffering from the same noise pickup); it must be the test socket.

This will quickly enable us to see whether it is something inside your property (in which case we can investigate further) or whether it is outside of your property (in which case you should get IDNet to raise a fault with BT).

Highly unlikely to be IDNet, otherwise there would be more reports of similar happenings.

I had this problem on Tiscali.. My margin would slowly decrease from 15(ish) down to 0 and then keep getting disconnected for an hour or sometimes hours on end, Happened only at night, past 6pm and was fine past 4am.

It turnt out to be a problem at the exchange, BT did a lift and shift (if thats correct?) and this sorted my problem out. It took the phone line out aswell when they did this.

neocr0n

I'm siding with psp83 on this one.

I already know I've had massive problems at my exchange in the past.  Its the reason I'm now on the "more stable" 2mb connection instead of max.

I'll phone them tomorrow and raise a fault.

Thanks fellas.

The one thing we can say with certainty is that it's nothing to do with IDNet. Poor noise margin and loss of sync is all about the bit between your router and the exchange.
