PPPoe

Does IDnet support PPPoe as well as PPPoa?

And does anybody know if PPPoe is really less efficient due to more overheads etc which is what I have heard?

AFAIK, anyone offering a BT IPStream service can only offer PPPoA support. According to Wiki, PPPoA is slightly mo0re efficient:

I was under the impression that PPPoE authentication has been in place on IPStream products for a few years now, but I could be wrong. It was certainly being trialled at one stage. The best way to tell is to try it and see if it works.

I've had it working, according to the router, Sebby, but I'm not sure whether I believe the router.

I don't believe it is a 'feature' that PPPoE works, more than some exchanges will allow it.  If I set my router to PPPoE it won't connect.

The other problem being that routers seem to report the information incorrectly at times, so what they tell you they are doing, and what they are actually doing, can be very different.

Thanks for the replies, I will give it a go on Thursday when I get migrated and see what happens.

I used it successfully on my old Pipex fixed 2meg, but since being unexpectedly moved to what looks like max (and then seemingly capped to 1meg  ) I have had to go back to PPPoa. PPPoe just makes my setup easier as the router can then initialize the connection.

It's probably that you've been moved to LLU. Perhaps this is why PPPoE no longer works, and when you're back on BT IPStream it'll work fine again.

yes the dreaded Tiscali LLU 

strangely 'samknows' says my exchange has no LLUs, but maybe it has just gone in

It's possible. Or it could be that PPPoE is only available on the old fixed-rate products. I can't say for certain.
