looking for pci card with wireless capabilities (aerial jobby)  & cable ethernet socket. Does such a beastie exist?

Simon

Yes.  About £15 from any PC shop, or probably cheaper online.  A wireless network card is, I think, what you're after.

Hmm i think he was after a wireless card with the ethernet socket? Just had a look round scan and OCUK and can't seem to find any! Maybe I'm just blind.

Netgear do one, a NETGEAR  54 Mb WG311 its about £17 online but I have never seen one with a Ethernet socket as well, you can get separate Ethernet cards though cheaply :) has the pc not got a Ethernet port?
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

I've never seen one that does both, I have to say.

If you're running out of PCI slots, you could get a network card plus a wireless USB dongle thingy.

kinmel

My local computer shop's website says the PCI ethernet card is £7 and the PCI wireless or USB wireless are £10

Or a Killer NIC M1 for about £170 >:D what kinmel suggests is about right, just get a 10/100 ethernet card and a cheap wifi card and thats all you need  :)

pci slots are full bar one but will view puter over the weekend, have a feeling that 1 of the slots has a dial up modem in it. If so, prob solved.

Simon

Sorry, I could have sworn I'd seen them in my local computer shop.

I've never seen a card with both ethernet and wi-fi though there is certainly no techincal problem that would prevent production of such a card (it may be nessacery to use a PCI-PCI bridge though which would push up the price a bit).

You can get products that plug into a PCI slot and connect to an external case which contains two or more PCI slots but they cost more than a low end PC so aren't generally an option. I've also seen PCI to dual PCMCIA/cardbus adaptors which iirc were more reasonablly priced.

You don't say how old the machine is but if it is a very old machine and has a free ISA slot then you could get an ISA ethernet adaptor (you will probabblly have to hit up ebay or amazon marketplace or similar for this, nowhere seems to sell them new anymore). If it it a newish machine then you can get pci express x1 ethernet adaptors (e.g. http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11175&NavigationKey=4294960491&NavigationKey=47520000&CategorySelectedId=11175&PageOffset=0&RecordOffset=0#Paging ).

Don't know quite how old the machine is but it runs on gas!  ::) The instruction book is printed in latin and bears hebrew references to the dead sea scrolls!!
Had a quick gander this morning and there's a spare pci socket AND a dial up modem so prob is solved.
Only thing is I feel incredibly guilty having to deprive the 'wildlife' within the case which is also covered with a sticky nicotine layer. Yuck!!! Chappie said he bought it 2nd hand around 6 years ago!! Help!!!
