it's weird because I did simultaneous (almost) traceroutes from ubuntu and vista; ubuntu timed out like that last post but vista went through in 7 hops

???

Yep just done the same tests. XP no problem, 7 hops. Linux, times out. How strange is that?

spooky..............anything to do with MTUs etc I wonder
I can't change mine on Vista, router says 1500 but IDNet seem to have set it at 1460. Wouldn't have a clue as to how to go about messing with ubuntu especially at the moment as I've just spent all day upgrading and it's being a bit 'precious' at the moment

I haven't been around much tonight, so I don't know if there were any problems here, but hopefully it was just a temporary glitch. We have seen some routing issues recently that were outside IDNet's control, but the cause of this may well have been something else.

Lance

I'm guessing that is BT playing up, as in all the tracerts with timed out hops, the hops are all out of IDNet's network.  >:(

For anyone who's interested.........the Linux v Vista thing does seem to be a result of two things
For a start Linux uses UDP packets whereas Windows uses ICMP. The asterisks, if you use network tools traceroute, translate to "asymm" which basically means that the path to the host and back are different and could indicate some sort of 'logjam' along the path.
Oh yes and I discovered that Ubuntu now uses tracepath rather than traceroute so you live and learn.
Using tracepath I saw it was using pmtu 1500, as defined by the router setting. When I changed the MTU on eth0 to 1460......bam........it went through in 8 hops

Presumably, packet fragmentation was causing the problem. Fascinating to see just how critical the MTU setting can be.
