Is there any software or anything to reduce background noise and optimise the video for the main purpose - to record interviews (their speech not others!)

Its for a college project and some of our interviews are competing with background noise

thanks guys

Lance

What program are you using to edit the video? Often there is additional plug-ins you can download to do this sort of thing.

Hi,

What is the nature of the noise please? What does it sound like? What made it?

From my professional experience I can say that filters aren't a good way of dealing with a problem like this. They will always have some kind of quality knock-on with the wanted signal. If you are shooting the material yourself I think you would do much better to invest in or hire a good microphone that is appropriate to the scenario (I am happy to help you with advice on this) or change the interview location to prevent the noise being recorded in the first place rather than to try and remove it after the fact.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi,

That kind of stuff is very difficult to remove as it is similar in nature to the wanted material. There some (expensive) plugins for Digidesign ProTools that might help but you would really need to be editing on Avid for that to not be a pain in the ****!

The best way is to get a good tie clip microphone or a very directional pole mic and mic the person tight so you don't pick up the background in the first place. If you don't want to purchase this kind of stuff then you should be able to rent from any good broadcast rental place.

Another really important thing is to always wear headphones connected to the camera or recorder so you can hear how good (or bad) something is before you get home with the tape.

If you could do the thing in one day an alternative would be to hire a proper sound man with his own equipment and let him sort it out for you. I think you should gbe able to get that done for less than £200 a day.

Cheers,
Paul.
