Hi,

Now that a number of people have been on MAX for a week or more I was wondering what speeds you are seeing for a certain sync speed.

I ask as I sync at 8192 but the fastest speed I get (even in the silly hours of the morning) is about 3500 - 4000. Have seen posts about from people getting 6000+.

Perhaps all will change after the magic 10 days, but not holding my breath.

These are my speedtest (various) readings at 8am today.

Synch @ 5408.

AG             4.49
Giga           4.22
kbps           2.26
Dslzone      3.71
BTw            4.27

All done within about 3 minutes total time.  Id like to believe the 4+ readings are accurate but it feels like the 2 or less are reality. :'(

On an 8128 carrier, the highest I've seen so far is 6595Kbps (here), but on occasion it's fallen to below 300Kbps.

It seems to be getting better with time though... the max is slowly getting higher and the really slow troughs rarer.

It seems to me that the idea that BT are gradually ramping up my profile has something to commend it.

Bt Good ??? Have they had a change of management.  ;D

My connection sync speed is 8128 and i have rarely been above 5000.

Thanks all for your replies.

Bill, I have not had anything as high as your high but have had some pretty dismal lows. Infact at about 800 at the moment.

Hoping it is a combination of the early days of MAX and the school holidays. Did not have these lows a coulpe of weeks ago while still on 2M.

Me neither. I'm sure it's an effect of MaxDSL, but one thing puzzles me- surely the proportion of broadband users on Max can't yet be all that high, and the proportion who can get 8megs is much lower... so why the fairly drastic effects? Odd.

I'm waiting for one beginning with a 7, then everybody will hear about it  ;D

Well i`m happy with max dsl...i was stuck on 1 meg and now even on a bad day i get over 2 meg and on a good day i get 3.5 meg :banana2:

This evening Matthew, I will be mostly browsing @ <> 4.5Mbps  :out:
Suits me juuuust fine  ;D

Read my last post here. Should clear a few things up ;)

My Max is flying tonight, synced at the usual (always between 6 and 7MBit), throughput about 4 ... outside the 30%FTR but who cares! :)

Coopes

Yeah I'm the same as Mark the best i've had is 3606 still happy with that.

Let`s all get the 10 day Rambo training over and we`ll see. ;)

Bottom line, I think we can all safely say that for the same money we all have a better connection than we did pre-Max. :)

hmmm why say that, when all the "bratts" are off school  ???  .....lets wait another week and then we can say, for sure its well worth the no-extra cost  ;)

Mark have you tried the Master Phone socket ring wire trick??

Coopes

No mate, I was thinking of getting one of these: http://www.clarity.it/acatalog/ADSL_Installation.html

Been told they will do the same job as removing the ring wire.

Apparently so, but removing the ringwire is cheaper to see if it works  :)

Are you going to try it, let us know what happens, I will be waiting here

Right, opened master box and removed wires from no3 & no4 terminals. Screwed the cover back on and checked the house phone worked. So far so good  :)

I have kept records of my US & DS Margins & Line attenuation since I installed the router just over a week ago.

Bearing in mind I`m not sure which of these numbers are the important ones, and whether higher or lower is best  :-[  the result of removing the ring wires are as follows;

Previously my US Margin would be 28/26 and the DS margin anywhere between 9 and 3 depending on the time of day, it dropped during the evening. The Line Attenuation was static in both directions at 30.

Now US Margin is steady at 26 and DS margin steady at 10. Normally would be dropping at this time of night. Line Attenuation is unchanged at 30 US & DS.

So would some kind soul offer an opinion? The only benefit I can see is that DS Margin has remained at 10, whereas last night is was down to 3.

Is this good or bad  :-[ :-[ :-[

Bill

The basic rules are:

Attenuation- the lower the better, but in practice there's damn-all you can do about it, you're stuck with whatever you've got. Your figures are fine.

SNR/Noise margin/various other descriptions- the higher the better. (SNR stands for Signal-to-Noise ratio)

Upstream is usually a fair bit higher than downstream, but is less important for most people and, again, you can't do much about it anyway- yours looks OK.

The downstream figure is what will determine the speed you can get on MaxDSL- as the speed goes up the SNR goes down, BT limit you to the value just before the lines cross! You can have some effect on the downstream SNR- removing the ring wire, keeping internal phone wiring away from interference-producing items (TVs, Monitors, anything with a commutator-type motor....), don't run phone and mains wiring close/parallel to each other...

Your speed would have been limited to what 3dB would have allowed as that was the lowest value. If you've managed to stabilise it at 10dB you should see a significantly higher sync rate, but it may take a few days for the exchange to decide that the improvement isn't just a blip. It's much more cautious about increasing rates than decreasing them.

Hope that helps....

Thanks for the explanation Bill  :)

Sorry for being thick but in my case would DS Margin be the snr?  :-[

Bill

There's some disagreement about this....

SNR is Signal to Noise ratio, and BT set a minimum value of (I think) 10dB for it. Noise margin ought to be the extra amount you have over this minimum, so (for example) an SNR of 22dB would mean a noise margin of 12dB. Judging by your figures, you've got the second version.

Trouble is, it's like 95% of electronic engineering- terminology tends to be sloppy and the two terms are sometimes used in the wrong place. Only real way to find out is to ask the makers, but I'd be pretty confident that your figures are actually noise margin, so as long as they stay above zero you should be OK.

They are still off school regardless of MaxDSL ;) Read the poll, concensus seem happy with Max :)

Point is, we really should wait until Rambo does his stuff ;) And in the meantime, good stuff regarding faceplates and removing ringwire. We have determined ourselves with all the feedback on speedtests, sync etc that we should be doing our upmost to improve SNR to enhance quality of line which in turn should see stability and perhaps a better sync rate. Personally, I installed an ADSL faceplate and Cat5 cable from master socket about a month ago. My SNR (when on 2Mbit service) went up about 6dB. In Max terms, this could be about 0.8Mbit worth of sync so it`s worth doing ;)
