Indeed - the last section of the last episode moves me to tears every time. They are all there waiting to go over the top, and talking about their lives - George reminiscing about signing up, the friends he's lost, and admitting he's scared, Darling talking about hoping to go home to Doris etc, and the last scene is just amazing - the battleground turning into a poppy field is just such a powerful image.

The best and most moving piece of drama I have watched for a long time,made even more poinent by no music at the end,an example of how great we can be to still produce quality

Yep - I can imagine the trenches being very like that in the last few minutes before each charge, and that's what makes it so poignant. I really do hope that we never again see anything like that at all

What so many people don't realise is how few got out of the trenches, let alone more than about 10 yards. The order of the day was to walk, while the Germans just used their machine guns to good effect. The officer class were inept, if not criminally negligent.

They didnt give a damn Rik so many young men cut down in those first few yards,the terror I cant even begin to understand........almost a cliche now but all theat blood for a few yards of mud.and of course the promise of a"A Home fit for Heroes" and yet they got Heros fit for homes.........

They didn't David, they were too busy making their reputations.

And what a price our lads paid for thier reputations.........while so many laid in wet rat infested muddy graves.The officers had thier medals polished.................blood tarnishes the shine and always will.Te officers got silver gongs,our lads got bronze plaques......something which I hope will never be forgotten
