No, that looks to be a DNS problem, it failed at 'looking up'. I'll drop support a note.

correct as usual Rik, just swapped to open dns and the forum loads fine but not with IDnet dns.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Thanks for the confirmation, Ted.  :thumb:

I have my primary DNS set to Idnet and the scondary to open dns, seems to work for me.  Don't usually have problems accessing any sites with that setup.

Rik

Interesting idea, Vit, I'd never thought to do it that way.  :thumb:

That's quite a good idea - thanks! :)

Ted

Yes that does work but is slower that just Open dns, maybe because the primary IDnet server doesn't work and then it defaults to the secondary Open dns server?

Rik

Slower generally, Ted, or just when there's an issue with IDNet?

I'd imagine that's how it would work, Ted, in which case it would be slow in the case of sites that IDNet's DNS fails on.

Ted

I just meant slower when trying to access that Toppy forum. With idnet=pri and open dns=sec there is a lag and with open dns =pri&sec it goes straight in (cache cleared first).

It may be a little slower but I really can't be bothered changing dns servers all the time.

OpenDNS is pretty reliable. I'm not sure why I changed back to IDNet's in the first place come to think of it...

Perhaps because for most resolves they are quicker.

Could have been, although OpenDNS is feeling faster for me now.

I recently tried Open DNS but didn't notice any difference.

Sebby

I think it's much of a muchness with DNS, and perhaps the differences are only evident when there's a problem with one of them.

Rik

Technically, IDNet's ought to be faster when everything is working normally, as it's within the network.

Rik

Mind you, that assumes you can measure a few milliseconds in everyday use. :)

I think that's the key point. OpenDNS certainly seems to be more reliable, so even if it is costing me a few milliseconds, I'll probably just stick with it this time.

Great idea. If the primary DNS fails for a particular site, how long is it before the query is resent to the secondary DNS? Is it many seconds, just a few, or milliseconds? I've no real reason for asking other than an interest in how it works.
