i am new to the forum. i have ended up here as i have had issue with long line for number of years which was bearable until recently when bt upgraded my network which has really slowed me down to the point where i think is it worth paying them for the service i am getting.
i am some distance from the line. before the network upgrade last month i had the wire coming into the house replace and although i do have poor speeds i do not suffer from drop outs anymore.
my current router is a netgear dgnd3300
below are my current router stats, not sure exactly what they mean, but i do know that my noise margin is too high and there in lies the problem.
on another forum it was suggest to try a 2 wire and i have subsequently ordered one off ebay today.

In short, trying a 2700HGV is certainly worth a shot, but make sure your internal wiring and filters are up to scratch too. Let us know if you want any help further than the FAQ goes with regards to checking stats using the test socket etc.

my internal wiring is all new, bt came out couple of months ago and redid it because i had extension built.

It's probably still worth checking the router stats from the test socket just to be sure.
As for the speedtest error, looks like a odd database issue. I'd try again later/tomorrow and if you still get the same message call your ISP support line.

My guess is that you have a
very long line, the Netgear won't report a larger attenuation above 63.5db. To have an upstream sync higher than your downstream suggests to me that there's a lot of noise being picked up on the line, probably between you and the exchange if you're in the test socket (I'm not sure whether you are or not). The noise margin is not hugely significant, it suggests to me that you had a resync at a noisy time, and the noise has lessened. 1.3db would certainly give you significantly more speed, relative to your current sync, probably 100-150kbps, but I have a feeling that, in return, you'd find the line less stable.
A 2700 has to be worth a try, for many of us on long lines, it's given a significant improvement in speed and stability. Another router to consider is the Billion 7800N, a tad expensive, but it has settings for long lines which are reputed to give a marked improvement. It's also future proof as it can be used with fibre should that ever be an option for you.

My box has been despatched from ebay and I should get it tomorrow. Not sure the version but I have a few questions.
Should I be setting it up when it arrives and updating it or shall I plug in and see how it acts first?

Once working from the test socket, a copy and paste of the stats would be most helpful (the sane as those in your first post) and the BT test is a bonus.
As for the router, I advise setting it all up without it connected to telephone line and just plugging it in at the end. I think I would just plug it in and see what happens, don't worry about updating it.
I'd agree, Lance, setup, then connect to the phone line and check the stats as soon as it's in sync.

Your line is clearly resyncing quite frequently, but the NM figures suggest sporadic noise. Do you have a bettery-powered MW radio? The BT tester is a lwa unto itself, I'm afraid. :(

You have to be resyncing because the sync speed and noise margin keep changing. The results in the test socket suggest your wiring is partly to blame. Is there a wire, often orange/white, connected to terminal 3 at the back of the faceplate?
ADSL works in the MW band, so the radio can be used to detect external interference. Sounds odd, but it works. :)
hi there, have attached a pic
basically by replaced cable from wire outside (im in a bungalow) and ran it straight in with a new white cable. you can see in the pic it runs straight into the wall and in the socket. there appear to be thin wires behind green and black but they are not loose. other than that the wiring looks fine and is 2 months old

That's the backplate, so it appears you have no extensions. In which case, I'm at a loss to explain the apparent improvement on moving to the test socket. :dunno:

It'll be interesting to see what the 2700 makes of the line. It of course will measure the real attenuation and not limit it to 63.5db.
Also it's DSL diagnostics will give us a better clue as to filter/line problems.

Don't make too many changes, ie force too many resyncs, in a short period, it will trigger DLM and drop your speed even further.
errr i think i may have done that!! swapped filters over and it hasn't come back up yet :(
If it hasn't come back up, I'd suggest reverting to the older filter and see if it does then. If so, it's a faulty filter in the Netgear box.

I have a dgn 2200 and it has a attenuation of 58 I put on my 2wire 2700hgv and the attenuation is now 48 and my sped has increased by 1mb/sec to 3500 from 2000, nothing else was changed and I have an old ,really old, BT main socket.
so there mat be hope??? signs are not good going on what you guys are saying :(

The noise margin figure which matters is the one immediately after a resync. That 7.4db could be a 6db resync where the noise has decreased, hence margin increased, or it could be a 9db sync where the noise has increased.

That covers most of the details in setting up just about any version of the 2700. As Rik says though, we'll be here if you need any advice.
Be very careful if you're tempted to flash it. As far as I'm concerned the best firmware for a long line is the SBC, but if you haven't got the right type(Original Version 1 with single SSID) then don't even think about it

It should work, it's the business hub you want. What are you seeing displayed?
Is this a 2700? Try just typing HOME into your browser.
hello. strange im in now. home didnt work though ip did. have changed ppp username and bt password. broadband light flashing am waiting fof connection to come up.
It can take a while, it's the slowest booting router I know...

If it still hasn't synched then a couple of things to check:-
That you have used the ADSL cable that came with the 2700 and not one from your existing router.
That you are plugged into the 'DSL' socket ( IIRC its the top one ) on the 2700, there are other ports that
can take the RJ11 plug and I've known people use the wrong one.

i usually use a speedtest.net app on my iphone and get around 22kbs down and 14 kb up
just ran it and im getting 39s down and 45kbs upload which seems v high. ping is around 80 which was normal
are there any tweaks i could do. would it be worth trying the first version of this router with the hacked software?

From the sound of it its a v5 firmware version.
You can disable the Fusion wireless network ( to avoid confusion ) from here http://home/xslt?PAGE=C01&THISPAGE=&NEXTPAGE=C01
You should see a Disable option against each of the wireless networks, if you click the one for Fusion it will disable it and the option will now change to Enable. The change will survive any reboot BTW.

i am definatley getting better speeds from the netgear i am pleased to report definatley an improvement so far. will disable the fusion setting thanks for the pointer.
i guess i knew long line was an issue but didnt realise it was that bad!
im on version 5.29.117.6 by the way.
is there anything to be gained by changing this softward. will bt force an upgrade through to v6?
That firmware is pretty good TBH . I'd be tempted to use the trick on the tripod site http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/032.htm to prevent an update to v6 for the time being, since once it upgrades you can't go back.
With your line length you are lucky to get any ADSL at all if you look at the graph here http://www.internode.on.net/residential/adsl_broadband/easy_broadband/performance/
That seems to indicate that at your sort of attenuation levels then ADSL2+ may actually give better results. I've never had any experience of that myself but if your exchange is 21CN enabled then it might be an option...

If your router holds sync for a period of time with no drops then the BT line management will lower the target noise margin which will result in a higher sync.
This happened to my line when I changed to a 2700 my margin was at 9.0 but over time it dropped to 6.0 and even to 3.0. The problem is if it goes too low then the line becomes unstable and the noise margin get raised again, it's a bit of a vicious circle.
so i could do with noise dropping down towards 6 really and holding a stable connection around that
6.0 is the normal target noise margin set by BT and provides a good level of leeway for an increase in noise without the router losing sync.
From what I can tell your noise margin at sync was 8.5 and then dropped to 5.0, that is not good news i'm afraid as a drop in value indicates more noise on the line. If the value had increased above 8.5 then you would have had more chance of the target value been set lower by the line management.

Your current noise margin will drop in the evening as the line picks up more interference from street lights etc. The 2700 will hold sync at low noise margin values which is why it is good for long lines. You should see a rise in the margin (less noise) in the morning.
But I really don't think you're going to go any faster, though ADSL2+ would be worth a try if it's available

the line has not dropped out for nearly a year. before this router drop outs were frequent. not sure on speed still or if anything can be done in that respect??
